About Stuart Langley
Seeing the Person, Not the Diagnosis
I believe that every person deserves to be seen as more than a diagnosis.
While evidence-based practice is at the heart of everything I do, I believe it is even more important to understand the person sitting in front of me. Diagnoses can help us make sense of experiences and guide treatment, but they should never define who someone is or limit what they are capable of becoming.
My practice is grounded in compassion, curiosity and collaboration. Every person has their own story, strengths, values and aspirations, and my role is to understand these before deciding together on the most appropriate path forward. Rather than simply treating symptoms, I aim to understand the whole person and help create meaningful, lasting change.
I don't believe my job as a psychologist is to tell you how to live your life or what your future should look like. Instead, I see my role as walking beside you, supporting you through life's challenges, and providing the guidance, skills and scaffolding you need to build a meaningful life on your terms—not mine.
Therapy is a collaborative process. Together, we'll work to better understand your experiences, recognise your strengths, develop practical strategies, and navigate the obstacles that may be standing between you and the life you want to create. My hope is that, over time, you'll become increasingly confident in relying on your own values, strengths and resilience, knowing you have the tools to continue moving forward long after therapy has ended.
Ultimately, my goal is not for you to become dependent on therapy, but to leave with greater confidence, self-understanding and psychological flexibility, equipped to continue building a life that reflects your values, your goals and the person you want to become.
My Professional Journey
I am the Clinical Director of EM Psychology and a Registered Psychologist with more than 19 years of international clinical experience helping individuals, couples and families navigate some of life's most complex challenges.
Originally trained in the United Kingdom, I have worked across the United Kingdom, South Africa, the United States and Australia, gaining extensive experience across private practice, forensic mental health, child protection, family therapy, drug and alcohol services, organisational leadership and community mental health.
Throughout my career I have been drawn to working with people experiencing significant adversity and complex psychological difficulties.
Early in my career I worked in the Cape Flats region of Cape Town, South Africa, supporting young people at risk of gang involvement and individuals affected by violence, trauma and social disadvantage. This experience reinforced my belief that behaviour cannot be understood without first understanding a person's life story and environment.
Returning to the United Kingdom, I spent several years working within forensic mental health services, providing psychological assessment and treatment for individuals involved with the criminal justice system. During this time I facilitated therapeutic groups, conducted neuropsychological assessments and worked within multidisciplinary teams supporting people with complex mental health presentations.
Recognising the importance of early intervention, I later transitioned into community forensic mental health, working intensively with adolescents and their families in their homes. This work focused on reducing behaviours of concern, strengthening family relationships and helping young people remain safely within their communities.
In 2015 I relocated to Australia, where I managed a therapeutic drug and alcohol program before moving into child protection services, supporting families at risk of having their children removed due to significant safety concerns.
During this time I also completed supervisor-level training in Functional Family Therapy in Los Angeles, further strengthening my expertise in working with families experiencing complex behavioural and relational difficulties.
Alongside my clinical work, I have held significant senior leadership positions, leading multidisciplinary teams, supporting organisational change and developing clinical services. These experiences continue to shape my approach to leadership development, supervision and organisational consulting.
